Palmettos on the Bayou

Slidell has a diverse culinary scene but seafood’s the star here at many of the restaurants. Dine with a view overlooking the marina or on beautiful decks built over cypress-shaded Bayou Bonfouca. Fried seafood poboys. Boiled crabs, shrimp and crawfish. Gumbo and etouffee. The flavors of Louisiana are on the menu here in mom-and- pops and the feel is casual and family-friendly, even at chef-run spots like Michael’s, Palmettos and Nathan’s. You’ll find worthy Cuban food here, and Thai and Vietnamese, but it’s the institutions like Vera’s Seafood and Young’s, a steakhouse that didn’t even need a sign for many years, that keeps the locals happiest.
