10 Ways to Shop in St. Tammany Parish

Shop til' you drop on the Louisiana Northshore, located on the northern shores of Lake Pontchartrain and just 40 minutes from New Orleans' French Quarter. Works of art, stylish clothing, and thrifty finds are in abundance throughout the picturesque towns. Save room in your luggage because there is something for everyone on your year-round gift list and even special goodies that are calling your name, too.

1. Festival Finds

The Northshore thrives with year-round festivals. These can't miss festivals are the ultimate shopping weekend experience. The spring and fall are celebrated with the two-day Olde Towne Slidell Antique Street Fair where vendors line the streets with collectibles, arts, homemade crafts and baked goods. In March, the eclectic town of Abita Springs hosts their Whole Town Garage Sale. Make sure to have your walking shoes ready and bring a bag to carry all the trinkets you'll find. The Three Rivers Art Festival in downtown Covington is a weekend full of art, shopping and entertainment that is held each November.

2. Antique Collectibles 

There is an eye-catching antique in everyone's life and going on the hunt for them turns them into a true treasure. In Abita Springs, Attic to Awesome brings about nostalgic feelings with vintage decor and homemade gifts. Mae Antiques in Mandeville is a great place to hunt for garden collectibles, architectural iron and jewelry. Over in Covington, swing into Copper Rooster and Antiques-Gifts and Cottage Antiques. Both have an abundance of unique home decor, homemade gifts, art and glassware. Make an afternoon of the antique "picking" in the Slidell Historic Antique District and stop into a local Tammany Taste restaurant for a bite to eat too.

3. Big Box Brands

The Louisiana Northshore has three, large shopping centers, River Chase in Covington, and Premier Centre in Mandeville and the Fremaux Center in Slidell. All three are sprinkled with great dining options, commercial favorites and are close to major intersections, providing for ease of access. Between towns, great shopping centers are abundant. Stop at these smaller shopping areas for even more must-shop stores.

4. Thrifty Treasures

If you're known as the Queen of thrifting among your friends and family, then you've found the place to shop! Gran's Attic in Old Mandeville boasts a regularly changing host of goods, including home decor, name-brand clothing for men, women and kids, and even brand new items, too. In Slidell, visit Itsy Bitsy Closet to find clothes, toys and more for the little ones in your life.

5. Farmers Markets

St. Tammany Parish's farmers markets are bustling with fresh produce, hand-made jewelry, natural soaps, glass-blown and wood-carved crafts, and so much more for the take-home purchasing. The locals who gather to display their masterpieces have no shortage of delicious delights to be savored on the spot, too. The best news of all is that all of our farmer's markets have an easily accessible bike path, the Tammany Trace, and nearby, free parking.

6. Pet Picks

Who can deny a freshly baked treat when given sweet puppy eyes, because we know we sure can’t! In Slidell, satisfy your dog's sweet tooth at Cafe du Bone Dog Bakery & Boutique. Your dog will beg for their homemade, all-natural beg-nets, flavored treats and celebration cakes. Pamper your pooch at Zorro’s FUNZone for Dogs for a complete doggie makeover. Let your pup pick out their new, designer apparel before hopping into the self-scrub tub. Add a treat to your dog's makeover; it's the perfect way to end a puppy spa day.

The nick-nacks decorating it! In Mandeville, the Redoux Home Market showcases breakout spaces of local artists and custom vendors that are individually tailored to their style. Retreat Home & Lifestyle in Covington is a shopper's paradise for finding the ultimate statement piece. You'll find LuLu's Almost New in Slidell. Their selection of gently used furniture is a great way to fill your home and save too.

8. Downtown Boutiques

The boutique stores of the Louisiana Northshore are overflowing with treasures. Stores across the downtown areas feature a multitude all within walking distance of one another. Downtown Covington showcases Columbia Street Mercantile. Girod Street in Mandeville is home to The Book and The Bean, Cameo Boutique and Das Schulerhaus Gift Gallery & Christmas Boutique. Olde Towne Slidell is sprinkled with boutiques including Stella and Grace and Three Divas & Sugar Daddy gift shop.

9. St. Tammany Souvenirs 

Who doesn't love getting souvenirs for loved ones while traveling? Grab your Abita beer swag at the Abita Brewery Gift Shop or Abita Brew Pub, where you'll find everything from t-shirts to cookbooks to dog collars. Covington-made Schwing's SOS Oyster Shells are a great gift for those waiting for you to return home. Find them at Aquistapace's Grocery in Covington, Kenny's Seafood in Slidell, and Mandeville Seafood. Swing by the St. Tammany Parish Tourist Commission for a free postcard of the picturesque Louisiana Northshore.

10. Shopping for Him

Ladies, we sure know how much we love to shop, especially when we're traveling. The good news is that the Northshore has stops the men in your life will love, too. Swing into Marsh and Bayou Outfitters for all things fishing, kayaking, and even Louisiana souvenirs, too. As you're browsing the boutique shops of Lee Lane and downtown Covington, take a step back in time at the H.J. Smith's & Sons General Store and Museum. Browse hardware, hunting gear, shrimp boots, yard ornaments, and more as your creative mind goes wild with new projects and the history that the building's creaking floorboards echo.
