For more than a century, area residents and visitors have had fun at the St. Tammany Parish Fair, an old-school celebration of fall, simple pleasures and rural life. Dates are tentative.
Expect livestock shows, gospel music night featuring local church choirs, a Mini Farm, quilt show, dancing competitions, pageants and displays of everything from home-grown canned goods to birdhouses to perfect potted plants. A parade from downtown Covington to the fair grounds just north of town revs up the fun.
Kids of all ages thrill to the midway rides, about three dozen of them, though parents especially enjoy the Dollar Nights where you can line up for any ride for a buck.
Livestock shows showcase chickens and rabbits, dairy cattle and beef cattle, swine, sheep and goats. The rodeo is the real thing, featuring bull riding, roping, bareback riding, trick riding and a calf scramble for the young ones.
More information about the full, five-day fair will be published here.
