Where to Go Paddleboarding on The Northshore

From the vast expanse of Lake Pontchartrain to the winding bayous that snake through charming towns, The Northshore offers a range of paddleboarding experiences for every adventurer.

  • Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville is one of the most popular destinations for stand up paddleboarding. Launch from the sandy beach along Lake Pontchartrain for panoramic views and gentle waves. The park’s protected shoreline makes it especially beginner-friendly, and the sunsets here are worth staying out for.
  • Bayou Lacombe provides a serene, shaded paddle through quiet waters and rich marshland. This route is especially great for nature lovers hoping to spot egrets, herons, and maybe even an alligator sunning itself on the banks.
  • In Madisonville, the Tchefuncte River is a favorite for both locals and visitors. Paddle through peaceful river bends past stately waterfront homes and marinas. For easy access, launch from the Madisonville boat launch or Maritime Museum Louisiana.
  • Bayou Cane, near Fontainebleau and the Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge, is another peaceful paddle spot. It’s particularly beautiful in the early morning or golden hour when the reflections on the water come alive.

Don’t have your own board? No problem! Several local stand up paddleboard outfitters provide rentals, lessons, and even guided experiences.

  • Bayou Adventure in Lacombe is a local go-to for SUP rentals. The Cane Bayou boat launch is located across from the Fire Station on Ronald Reagan Highway.
  • Cypress SUP Yoga and Paddle Board Co. offers more than just rentals. Join a group paddle or take your practice to the next level with SUP yoga classes — a unique experience that combines balance, movement, and mindfulness on the water. Classes are typically held in Mandeville and the surrounding areas, and they welcome beginners.
  • Seal Sports in Mandeville rents paddleboards and offers gear and accessories for water sports lovers. Their proximity to Lake Pontchartrain makes them a convenient stop before hitting the beach at Fontainebleau State Park.
  • In Slidell, Brooks’ Bike and Board Shop rents SUPs and can provide recommendations on where to launch for an easygoing paddle or a longer adventure. It’s a great place to start if you’re exploring Bayou Bonfouca or heading toward Heritage Park.
  • Abita Board Barn, located in Abita Springs, rents paddleboards and also sells new and used gear for those looking to invest in their own SUP setup.
  • Canoe and Trail Adventures in Covington rents paddleboards and gear seasonally with launch locations on Bogue Falaya River (Covington) and the Cane Bayou (Lacombe) boat launch.
  • Also in Covington, Kayaks to Geax is a fully mobile kayak rental delivery service, delivering single and double kayaks to any spot in St. Tammany Parish.
